Check that the Thumper is equipped, the node is not already depleted, and you are close enough for the interaction prompt.

Where to Find Aluminum
Craft the Thumper, leave the train for the Outskirts asteroid field, and inspect large floating rocks for orange-silver Aluminum deposits. Approach until the on-screen Drill interaction appears.
Large Outskirts asteroids → orange-silver patch → Thumper → 2 Aluminum
Do not search the small loose scrap around the train. Circle the surfaces of the larger rocks slowly, move within a few metres so the deposit label appears, then hold the Thumper's mining action until the ore enters your inventory.
Required tool chain
Get from basic Metal to mineable Aluminum

Collect two Metal
Use the loose pieces near the crashed train to craft the Crowbar.

Use the Crowbar to widen salvage options
Break marked locks and objects to collect the Metal and Plastic needed for the next tool.

Craft the Thumper
The verified starter recipe is Metal x4 and Plastic x2. Aluminum deposits do not respond to the Crowbar or Cutter.

Drill identified deposits
Approach until the Aluminum deposits label and Drill prompt appear. Do not plan around a fixed yield or respawn time until controlled tests verify them.

What Aluminum is used for

These four recipes need 16 Aluminum total. Craft the Cutter first when it blocks train repairs; keep the next four units available for the Twister once its quest unlock is complete.
Cannot see the deposit
Slow down and circle the rock. The ore patch is small and can read as ordinary texture from a distance.
Running out of oxygen
Collect Ice on the route, carry Purified Oxygen, and leave before the remaining meter is only enough for a perfect return.
